ACROSS THE UNIVERSAL- songs off the edge

Here’s another fun little comp  from @tigerinatower to get your fall kicked off to a fine start! A mish-mash of genres but a heaping helping of some new indie shoegaze sounds, some old under-the-radar goodies, and a fine amount of fun! Scroll down to the Red Source link and click to download the zip file!

1. Ain’t it a Shame- Scott Biram  (I totally dig the harmonica in this. It’s got teeth!)

2. Ordinary- Red Riders  (I love the opening of this song, and yes we are all ordinary and extraordinary!)

3. In Retrospect- Battleships (This may be my new favorite band find this month. Can’t wait for a full length album. They’ve been compared to Radiohead, but definitely have their own sound. Good stuff)

4. Black Like Me- Spoon (I don’t care how many times I hear this song, it’s always new to me. )

5. River- Civil Twilight ( I’m a fool for a haunting melody with lots of OOHs, and this tune doesnt disappoint!)

6. Ghostress- Fire! Santa Rosa Fire! (Love the heavy hitting droney guitar in this one, brings me back to my early shoegazer days. Reminscent of Ride, My Bloody Valentine etc.)

7. Tijuana 500- The Mess Hall (The most fun song on this comp, I think. Twangy Bass? Sure thing. Try not to saunter when you hear this. Not. Possible.)

8. Voice of Paradise- The Crayon Fields ( This is such a sweet sing-song melody- I’ve never heard of these guys but I’m certainly interested in finding out more!)

9. Rio-The Salvadors (“Hey Rio, I love you so, I’ve never been, but I want to go..”Um, yes, please.)

10. Dreaming is Easy- The Fresh and Onlys (I ran across these guys last year, and I’m still lovin em. This reminds me of grungy beach rock—a little gritty, super sunny, and maybe a salty tear in your eye (cause it’s just so pretty!)

11. Fooled With The Wrong Guy- Beulah (Ok, “Yoko” may be the best album you’ve never heard, and this song is just one of many that bring me to my knees. The banjo is stellar in this piece, but definitely check out all Beulah had. (miss that band :( )

12. John, She Was Never Only Dancing- Fergus Brown (Oh the lyrics to this one! Right along the lines of Jarvis Cocker, some smart mouth singsongin about bumping your girl…)

13. Collision (Head On)- Battleships (Yes, I’ve already told you, Battleships is a band you need to hear. This watery, dreamy, melancholy-esque will haunt you on those long nights when you are staring at your computer screen willing it to manifest something good. Or anything at all…)

14. Wasted On You- The Ugly Club (Catchy and upbeat- you’ll bob your head in time to this one.)

15. Between The Bars- Mojave 3 (Any chance I get to shine a light on this great band and you can bet I will. Love the dreamy, southern wail of the harmonica and the slide guitar. Add the banjo, and seriously I’m crying in my beer right now about all those silly boys I’d rather not think about anymore.)

16. Life Without Warning- Alberta Cross (And while we are cryin in our beer, here’s something to just rub the wound a bit more. The vocals reach right out and dare you to wake up but keep dreamin. Ok, done.)

17. Nerds In Love- Fergus Brown (I’m kind of inlove with this Fergus guy. And yes, I’m a nerd too, so of course it would be fitting that this song gets pegged right here.)

18. Every Walk That I’ve Ever Taken…(Has been in your direction)- Civil Twilight (I love the electronica/wired feel of this sleeper of a song. A love song for the underdog, you know the one who has to walk away but would rather cut off an arm or leg? Yea, if you know what I’m talking about, this song is for you.)

19. Civilian- Wye Oak (Now I am sure that I have put this song on atleast one other compilation but it’s only because it’s so frackin good that I  keep coming back for more. More dark than light, but I love how the desperation cracks in her voice and how the music builds leading you in like the pied piper…I’d happily follow to my demise if this song was playing.)

20. Done- Built To Spill (One of the greatest rock bands ever, in my humble opinion. And “done” seemed like a fine way to end a great mix of tunes, don’t you think? I think so, anyway. :)
