Girl Sailor- Songs of the Shipwreck
If the realm of emotion is an ocean, here’s a playlist to navigate the choppiest waters. Scroll down to the Source Link on the bottom left to download. Click and enjoy!
The Violet Hour- SeaWolf (The catchy little guitar riff reminds me of “Faith” by George Michael, but don’t let that scare you off. I love how this guy’s voice sort of quivers when he sings…)
I Sing, I Swim- Seabear (This is a little Icelandic band that just never ceases to make me happy when I hear em. This track is a few years old, but always sounds fresh to my ears!)
Float- KO KO (Whistling? Did you say whistling? I’m in. I love this guy’s high voice, especially when he sings “I can learn from my mistakes, in the morning I’ll be right…” Sound like the perfect guy.)
Swim Until You Can’t See Land- Frightened Rabbit (I love the layers upon layers upon layers of sound in this song. A catchy little guitar riff lays the foundation to the goodness built upon it. )
Beyond The Blue- Josh Garrels (If you aren’t familiar with Bandcamp yet, you need to be. This is yet another artist to be found over there. The strings in this song are notable, and his voice is divine.)
Diving Bell- Gold Beach(Something about this song reminds me of Band of Horses, maybe his high voice? The ghostly guitar? Whatever it is, this song makes me want to find more from this band)
Dreamt- Hands and Knees (IThis song makes me immediately think of walking drunk thru a dirty city street late at night. Maybe not so much walking as a stumbling mess set to music. I like it. Heh.)
Dreamboat- Saskatchewan (How can you not put a song about a guy begging to be a “dreamboat” on a nautically inspired playlist? this song is slow and groovy and sexy and I think might be damn fine to sit and kiss to, all night.)
Starlight No. 1- Mojave 3 (More from one of my favorites-this quiet little melody will stick in your skin like one of those grass burs that make you stop dead in your tracks. The good kind of pain. Stop. Listen. Pull out the prickly, and kiss the boo-boo.)
Little Spring- Rocky Votolato (When I hear Mr. Votolato play guitar, I know what I need to be reaching for. This is a song for the lovers of cars and people and all things that go fast and hard into the night)
Tennesse- Gillian Welch (Oh Tennesse, the narrative of this song kills. For anybody who has ever questioned their own intrinsic goodness or wanted something so bad they risk everything. A sweet sad lullaby mourning the loss of innocence and the thrill of the forbidden.)
1904- Tallest Man On Earth (I don’t know if a guitar riff could make my heart leap like a happy little foal more than this one. Makes me want to snap, and smile, and wonder about history)
Anchor- Into It. Over it (This is from a Daytrotter session and this band really reminds me a bit of Ben Gibbard. Simple melodies, and a clean voice made me pick it.)
Season of the Shark- Yo La Tengo (One of the dinosaurs of Indie Rock, Yo La Tengo has a catalogue that will bring you to your knees, and it’s all damn good. I also saw it fit since it IS Shark Week to put this little ditty on.)
Cup of Coffee- Garbage (Going back in time for a little Garbage, but seriously, could Shirley Manson be any cooler? I hear this track and always wonder how could anyone tell her they don’t love her? I do, Shirley! You Rock!)
I’m Building Myself a Boat- First Aid Kit (Simple but strong, for all of us that are sailors at heart)
Ill-Fated- Golden Smog (Oh the supergroup lays this golden track upon us about shitty relationships. Somehow, somewhere, we can all relate, yes? :)
The Coast- Jennah Barry (This chick has an amazing voice, and I like that it starts out so naked and then the song gets built around it. When she sings about how our bodies feel in water, it makes me want to just jump in and swim again. And never leave.)
My Boat is Sinking- The Black Angels (This Austin psyche-band is one of my faves, and this quiet, somber tune is a bit off the grid for them, but haunting and lovely all the same.)
Yer Spring- Hey Rosetta! (This is the song when you finally emerge from the water, and clear your eyes, gather your resolve, and walk on into your destiny. It’s yours, it always was, all you have to do is to decide where you are going and put one foot in front of the other…)
